Dr Paul Paffen is a recipient of a State Library of Victoria Creative Fellowship 2005-6.

His project is titled:

WAR AND PEACE: H. SEPTIMUS POWER, M. NAPIER WALLER AND THE MURALS OF THE STATE LIBRARY OF VICTORIA.

M. Napier Waller, Peace After Victory (trial panel of the State Library of Victoria mural), 1926.

This publication provides a history of the H. Septimus Power and M. Napier Waller murals in the State Library of Victoria, highlighting their cultural, artistic and social context. It also promises an enticing interpretation of the iconography of the murals born from newly excavated primary source material, combined with contemporary art and cultural theory, to hold currency among today's audiences.

At its heart this project aims to promote the murals of the State Library of Victoria. It seeks to make known to a new generation the historical significance of two of Melbourne's major public murals, key works of Australian art of the 1920s.

Paul welcomes any information that can contribute to his research on the Library's murals.
